New EU Travel Rules in 2025/2026: EES & ETIAS Explained

The European Union is introducing two major changes to its border management system: the Entry/Exit System (EES), coming into effect in October 2025, and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), set to launch in late 2026. These systems will significantly impact how third-country nationals—especially visa-exempt travelers—enter the Schengen Area. If you're planning to travel to Germany or elsewhere in ETIAS Europe, it's crucial to understand the upcoming ETIAS application, ETIAS form, timeline, and requirements.

EES from October 2025: Digital Border Control for the Schengen Area

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace traditional passport stamps with fully digital entry and exit records. Starting October 2025, the system will:

  • Log travelers’ entry and exit data electronically,
  • Collect biometric data (fingerprints and facial image),
  • Automatically track the allowed length of stay.

The EES helps detect overstays and improves the overall security and efficiency of border checks at EU external borders.

ETIAS 2026: Electronic Travel Authorization for Visa-Exempt Nationals

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS, short for European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is not a traditional ETIAS visa, but a digital pre-travel authorization. It will be mandatory for travelers from over 60 visa-exempt countries starting from Q4 2026. ETIAS is similar to the U.S. ESTA system and is designed to pre-screen visitors before arrival.

ETIAS – When Does It Start?

The launch of ETIAS is expected in late 2026. Citizens of countries like the U.S., Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, and others will need to apply for ETIAS before traveling to any ETIAS Europe country.

How Does the ETIAS Application Work?

Travelers must complete the ETIAS form online, providing:

  • Personal information,
  • Passport details,
  • Travel purpose,
  • Security and health-related background questions.

Most applications will be approved within minutes, though some may take up to 96 hours.

ETIAS 2026: Key Facts

  • Fee: €7 (waived for travelers under 18 or over 70)
  • Validity: 3 years or until the passport expires
  • Usage: For short-term stays such as tourism, business, or transit
  • Availability: Entirely online via the ETIAS application platform
  • Coverage: All Schengen countries, including Germany

ETIAS Germany: New Requirement for Entry

From late 2026, travelers entering Germany from visa-free countries must hold an approved ETIAS. This includes short-term stays for tourism, family visits, or business. Without a valid ETIAS application, entry will be denied—even for short visits.

ETIAS Europe: One Authorization, Multiple Countries

A valid ETIAS will grant entry to all ETIAS Europe countries—Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, and others. The authorization can be used for multiple trips within the three-year validity period.

ETIAS vs. Visa – What’s the Difference?

Although some refer to it as the "ETIAS visa", it’s technically not a visa. ETIAS is intended for travelers who are already visa-exempt. Nationals of countries that require a Schengen visa will still need to apply for a traditional visa through consulates.

Conclusion: EES in 2025, ETIAS in 2026 – Be Prepared

The EU is modernizing its border management. From October 2025, the EES will record every entry and exit digitally. Starting in late 2026, visa-free travelers will also need to complete an ETIAS application via the online ETIAS form before entering the Schengen Area. Those planning to visit Germany or other ETIAS Europe destinations should prepare well in advance to ensure smooth entry.

Note: The introduction of EES and ETIAS has already been postponed several times in the past. The current launch dates (October 2025 and late 2026) may be subject to further changes. We will keep you informed and update this article accordingly.
